Okay, it’s been 3 days since the passage of Frank Turner in the club of the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, and still no word from it on this blog? Preposterous! Time to put the record straight!
Well, I’ve made no secret about it, I’m a Frank Turner fan. No, wait, let me put it differently: I’m a disciple (fanboy sounds so gay). I think FT is great, and think everybody should see him perform at least once in their lives. He’s to music what Mecca is to Muslims. Only he goes on tour.
(Comparing music to religion!? Oh no you didn’t!)
While I don’t always totally agree what he says, I believe that, in musical terms, he’s right on the money. He’s 0% about the image (proof was his highly unfashionable short-sleeved shirt he was wearing) and 100% about sincerity, honesty, conviction and respect.
You can expect him to give all he’s got with every single performance. That in itself is not easy, but on top of that, you believe him when he is singing. When the song gets angry, he gets angry, when the song gets intimate, he gets intimate. Not a lot of artists can do that.
I’m not going to give a detailed description of the show in Brussels, but let’s just say it was frikkin’ awesome. Not anybody can get away with a cover of Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen. He announced it as being “the best song ever written”, and in the following minutes, it was the best song ever written.
Every musician should take Frank Turner lessons.
